The owner of this immaculate 1972 LT-1 Corvette convertible says the purchase represented the culmination of a 14-year search for the desired color combination.

Now, after a quarter-century of enjoying his beautiful red-on-red Stingray, he’s decided to put the car on the market on Craigslist in the Oshkosh, Wisconsin area with an asking price of $57,900.

He describes his Mille Miglia Red Corvette as a “meticulously maintained, original numbers matching” car and even lists those numbers for the engine, transmission, exterior, and interior as substantiating proof.

One of just 405 LT-1 convertibles built in 1972, the car has been driven only 80,000 miles over the past 52 years.

The LT-1, of course, was built just three years from ’70 to ’72 with a total run of 4,977, with the chrome-bumper era coming to an end the last year with 1,741 of them leaving the St. Louis factory.

This car’s solid lifter high performance 350 engine is hooked to an M21 four-speed close-ratio manual transmission and pumps out 255 horsepower making use of the correct Holley 780 cfm carburetor and aluminum high rise intake manifold. (While the ’70 was rated at 370 horsepower, the much lower 255 horses for the ’72 is misleading as Chevy began a new system of figuring output that year.)

Not surprisingly, this car has earned many trophies over the years, including Gold Certification from Classic Chevy International and Blue Ribbon Concours of Iola, Wisconsin.

The new owner will receive documentation, manuals, and accessories with a clear title.

Unfortunately, about the only thing lacking on this car is air conditioning, which was finally an option in ’72 but appeared on only 240 cars – the others perhaps trading performance for comfort. Lack of AC in the hot Georgia summer was the main reason this writer traded our ’71 coupe a few years back.

As Corvette expert Don Sherman sums up this car and its brethren during a discussion with Hagerty: “Looking back, the LT1 is one of the most admired Corvettes and ‘Vette engines in history. There were two camps: Big block and small block. But the character built into the LT-1 would be very important for future Corvettes, and the LT-1 remains much loved to this very day for its performance and its historical impact.”
