A new era is in store for a long-running family business.

Burford Antiques was launched more than 40 years ago and moved to its current location in the old TSB building in King Street in Castle Douglas in 2022.

But now Jason and Kirsty Burford have put the building and the business up for sale as they look to move on to an exciting new venture.

Jason, whose parents ran the business before him, said: “We completely changed the TSB building from what it was to a stunning venture in our area and the opportunity has arose to take the next step.

“I can’t tell you the amount of people who say what an asset we are to Castle Douglas and it’s terrible we’re going.

“It’s not just friends, it’s local people.

“If we didn’t sell it, it wouldn’t be a loss because we would carry on what we’re doing here because it does work within Castle Douglas.

“We would carry on indefinitely.

“Someone could make it into a fantastic gallery or a stunning wine bar – it can be a stunning fine dining restaurant or a higher end cocktail bar.

“Castle Douglas has got the clientele for that.

“We’re open to ideas for what someone could envision, just as we envisioned it as a gallery and antique store.

“The footfall is colossal, we’re across the road from Mr Pooks and a lot of our clientele go there.”

Burford Antiques had premises in Carlisle and Dumfries before moving to Castle Douglas, where it was on the corner of King Street and Market Street.

Two years ago, it moved to the former TSB building, with the upstairs transformed into a gallery space called The Artist.

Jason added: “We’ve had lots of high end artists coming in, which is great.

“We’ve been in business for more than 40 years now but we want to retire and do it from home.”

High profile artists to exhibit include portraitist Gerard Burns – who is currently displaying work in The Artist – Douglas Lennox and Peter Howson.

Burford Antiques has also featured on TV shows including Antiques Roadshow and Antiques Road Trip.

And both Burford Antiques and The Artist are set to continue in the new venture.
