Richard Meeker said the coronavirus pandemic taught him and his business partner, Mark Zusman, a lot about the support that exists for local journalism.

Meeker and Zusman, owners of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Willamette Week in Portland, Ore., and also the Santa Fe Reporter, had set up a donation fund called “Friends of Willamette Week,” in which readers can give money to support journalism. He said initially the response was “negligible.”

“And then the pandemic hit, and the money flowed in,” Meeker recalled. “So we realized that there was real support for our efforts.”
