A property expert has warned against a growing interior design trend that could devalue your home and deter buyers. As interior design trends evolve over time, new data by Pinterest Trends has revealed a staggering surge in searches for ‘eclectic maximalism’.

With a message of ‘more is more’, eclectic maximalist interior design uses an abundance of color, an array of rich textures and mix of bold patterns. With a 60 percent month-on-month increase in the search term, a growing number of homeowners are now experimenting with diverse interior design choices.

But Terry Fisher, property expert at We Buy Any Home, is urging homeowners to be careful when implementing this trend, as it may not align with the tastes of the broader property market, and could have potential negative impacts on your property’s value and marketability.

“While embracing unique design styles can be exciting, it’s crucial to consider the long-term implications, especially when it comes to property valuation and market appeal,” Terry advises.

“Potential buyers often seek homes with neutral, universally appealing interiors that allow them to envision their own style. Eclectic maximalism, on the other hand, can overwhelm and polarise prospective buyers, making it harder to sell a property.”

Moreover, the risk of devaluing your home is a significant concern for homeowners who invest substantial time and resources into interior design. Terry continued: “While personal expression is important, homeowners must strike a balance between their individual tastes and the broader market demands if they’re looking to sell over the next couple of years.

“Overly niche design choices can limit a property’s appeal and ultimately, its resale value. In the property market, we’ve seen more and more people embrace maximalist interiors, but when it comes to selling a property, we’d urge homeowners to approach interior design trends with caution.

“While everyone has their own tastes and opinions, the best approach is to imagine a very ‘normal’ family living in your house and working out what they would and wouldn’t want.”

Showcase the unique features of your home, such as architectural details or scenic views, with strategic lighting and minimal decor distractions.

Focus on quality over quantity

Invest in high-quality furnishings and decor pieces that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your home. Quality craftsmanship speaks volumes to potential buyers.

Enhance curb appeal

Make a strong first impression by maintaining a well-manicured lawn, refreshing exterior paint, and adding inviting touches like potted plants or a welcoming front door.
