Secondhand overcoats and other heavy-duty jackets are increasingly in high demand by informal traders looking to launch their own small businesses reselling products bought wholesale from some of SA’s biggest coat importers.

At the same time, demand from ordinary walk-in retail customers has also been on the rise across demographics in recent years, as the fallout of a creaking economy brings pressure to bear on consumers across income groups.

Brian Hurley, CEO of The Overcoat Importer, SA’s largest such business with “more than 75 000 coats on display and for sale” has been running his business for the past 27 years in Benoni.
